FeedBurner Plugin

June 11th, 2006 by Mike

Quick WordPress tech note for anyone looking to direct 100% of their feed traffic to their FeedBurner feed. Steve Smith has a dead simple plugin that redirects all of your subscribers to a single FeedBurner feed. It took me approximately 5 minutes to set up.

Update: On another note, when did sitemeter start tracking “out clicks”? It’s useful to see what links people actually follow when leaving your site.

Do Not Try This At Home

April 23rd, 2006 by Mike

I accidentally washed (and dried) my camera today… the little guy was no match for the double load spin cycle. When I opened the dryer I saw the memory card and was like… “no I didn’t…” and then after removing a pair of jeans I came to the realization that “yes… indeed I did.”

You’ll be happy to know that the battery and memory card managed to somehow eject themselves from the camera… I won’t know if the memory card survived until I get it to someone’s card reader.

Collins

For Bartleby The Scrivener
By Billy Collins

“Every time we get a big gale around here
some people just refuse to batten down.”

we estimate that

ice skating into a sixty
mile an hour wind, fully exerting
the legs and swinging arms

you will be pushed backward
an inch every twenty minutes.

in a few days, depending on
the size of the lake,
the backs of your skates
will touch land.

you will then fall on your ass
and be blown into the forest.

if you gather enough speed
by flapping your arms
and keeping your skates pointed

you will catch up to other
flying people who refused to batten down.
you will exchange knowing waves
as you ride the great wind north.

Photos

I wouldn’t call myself a photographer, but I do shoot pictures. I finally got around to updating the photo section of this website. You can check it out here. I am going to attempt to put up several a week from here on out. I also have a few thousand photos on Flickr.

New Photolog…err… Photoblog… um… Whatchamacallit

September 25th, 2005 by Mike

Ok… so my blog has been somewhat schizophrenic over the last few months as I switched from writing posts to simply uploading some of the photos I have been taking. It has been bothering me, but I couldn’t figure out how to fix it.

I finally dove under the hood of Wordpress and figured out how to make a separate blog for my photos that suits my tastes. So from here on out, my new photos will be posted at http://mikeoliver.org/photolog. My blog will remain at this address.

Go ahead… check it out.

Transitions

September 22nd, 2005 by Mike

I am currently migrating from Blogger to Wordpress (the first time I have ever shifted away from a Google product). I have managed to get all my posts and comments ported over, but things might be a little broke down for the next few days as I get settled in.

ps. categorizing over 400 posts is going to be un-fun.

pps. I thought about not doing it, but my inner-librarian protested.

Out of the Woodwork

See…. Adam Hill does exist. For a minute, I was worried that you all thought I had an imaginary quote friend unquote who was going to quote guest blog unquote.

And In This Corner…

November 4th, 2004 by michael

Over the next few days, you may notice that some of the posts here seem to depart significantly from my typical voice and/or subject matter. That is because I have extended an invitation to Adam Hill to join me here on Memory’s Outbox. Adam is a good friend and a classmate of mine here at the law school. I thought it only right that I share with you all the good time that is Mr. Hill.

I will let Adam introduce himself more fully. But I wanted to say welcome.

My Blog is now Rolling on Dubs 1

May 11th, 2004 by michael

I woke up yesterday and Blogger had gone through the “change of life”

There is much to celebrate here, but I have found some minor annoyances which mean that I will have to still hack together some half-assed solutions. I don’t want to sound ungrateful. Blogger is free and they just added a boatload of features heretofore unavailable.

Comments
The comment feature is hot. No more pop-up windows and trying to find a reliable comment provider (thanks to Haloscan though… you guys were the best I found). Down fall of the comment system, however, is that one can only make anonymous comments (assuming they don’t out their info in the body of the comment) unless they are a registered Blogger user.

Post by Email
Hot… hot… hot! I love it. It works perfectly.

More Templates
I know every other blog will look like mine come June, but let’s face it… I cannot design and I am thrilled to have some color and a professional looking layout.

Post Pages
Blogger’s word for giving each post its own page. Makes permalinking and reading comments very easy and intuitive. I likes.

Miscellany
The new interface for managing existing posts is very straightforward and easy to manage and makes me quite happy. I do abhor the whole profile movement they are on. They want to collect my likes and dislikes etc and then you can selectively show portions of your profile (including a picture) on your side bar. Interesting to note, they won’t provide hosting space for the profile photo. If you are going to capture all of this user demographic data, you can at least man/woman up and provide the space to hold the picture.

So, overall it is a great new system. I was hoping for enough changes that I wouldn’t have to switch over to MT (and pay). I probably will have to anyway. But this is one of the most feature rich, no cost systems I have ever seen.
